I couldn’t agree more. I like to use the analogy of a bank looking to hire a bilingual associate. They won’t just hire anyone off the street who knows Japanese or French. The candidate, first and foremost, needs to have knowledge of the finance domain. Data Science is no different in many cases. Sure, many of the concepts and approaches may or less stay the same, but knowing the nuances of the data itself from industry experience separates the good data scientists from the great ones.
